56 Men, 13 Colonies, 1 Document The Declaration of Independence is a document that was written by Thomas Jefferson. After fixing a few grammar mistakes made by Jefferson, the delegates of the Continental Congress adopted the document. This American made declaration shows Great Britain how much the colonists yearned to be free from its powerful grasp. Before the signing of the declaration, Thomas Paine wrote a paper called Common Sense. This paper was written to show Americans, Patriots and Loyalists, how much they needed to be free and it convinced many people. These men who signed and created the Declaration of Independence were brave men who believed in America being a free country.
There are 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence. One of them is Thomas Jefferson who also wrote the document. Thomas Jefferson is a patriot that was chosen by the committee to write the Declaration. His copy was chosen. With a few mistake changes, the group was ready to sign it. He committed high treason by both writing it, signing it. He knows it was worth the risk. Jefferson also attended the First Continental Congress among other signers of the Declaration. Thomas Jefferson is and was 33 when he wrote the great document demanding our independence. Thomas Jefferson truly believed in freedom for all. He is a remarkable American, and patriot. He has done amazing things for the thirteen colonies, and hopefully a new nation.
Another signer of the new document is John Adams. Adams a attorney famous for defending the Redcoats in the trial for the Boston Massacre strongly believes in right to a fair trial, rights, and independence. He is a true patriot. Adams also attended the First Continental Congress. He and his wife are with many protests against British, for taxes and things like it. His cousin Samuel Adams also signed the document. Samuel Adams as well attended the First Continental Congress. Samuel and John are referred to as the Adams Brothers even though they are cousins. Samuel was also a Patriot willing the risk of being caught by the British. Samuel Adams, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and the other 53 signers of the Declaration of Independence took the risk wanting are 13 colonies free from England.
The signers of the declaration were not all so eager to sign. Knowing they would be hung and tortured if captured by the British. The reason why we are fighting this war, and the reason the signers signed, why they risked their lives, is because of Thomas Paine’s pamphlet Common sense written as a best seller around the world. This pamphlet, published earlier this year has influenced hundreds of people to see that it is necessary for America to vote for Independence. Common sense states in boldness why we must separate from Brittan and declare our independence. Yet many people criticized the pamphlet. For example Sam Adams, a patriot leader, said that common sense was words of extremists and constantly criticized it. Many people although are turning to the patriot cause after reading this pamphlet.
The Declaration of Independence was a powerful document. This document was America showing Great Britain that they are brave enough to stand up to a large and powerful country even though they are much larger than all of the American colonies combined. This one piece of paper basically started the Revolutionary war. If Thomas Paine didn’t create Common Sense, many Americans might not have been convinced that America needed to be free. The Declaration of Independence and the people who signed it may cause America to become a free country. These men brought together the 13 colonies in a united war against England.
